Addictive Disorders Committee Updates

Tom Horvath, Ph.D., ABPP, President

DATE: 12/8/20

One member is working in a child custody case and has been asked to evaluate the quality of progress in one parent who has been dealing with addictive problems, following an initial evaluation completed several years ago. We discussed multiple approaches to this evaluation, both qualitative and quantitative, for addressing progress, and how to make the most defensible and meaningful presentation to the court.

We continued our discussion about presenting a day long CE course. Bruce Liese has drafted survey for SDPA members, about what topics they would be interested in, at an addiction conference. We reviewed his draft, and will review again by email, within a week.

The committee is planning educational events during 2019, to include CE, as followup to the 2018 Fall Conference on addiction. We meet the 2nd Tues, 1:30 to 3:30, in January, March, May, (July), September and November, at Lasting Recovery in Sorrento Mesa. We are looking into having video attendance as an option. The primary goal of this committee is to educate ourselves and our colleagues about addictive disorders and their treatment. We welcome new members!

We are supporting the Fall Conference (October 27, 2018), which will focus on substance use disorders. We are also in the process of considering substance impaired psychologists (and possibly other professionals), what questions about them we want better answers to, and what problems related to them we might want to address.

The Addiction Committee had it's initial meeting with six of 10 psychologists in attendance ( Carrie Jaffe, Regina Huelsenbeck, Arthur Farkas, Mary Spease, Charlie Nelson, and Tom Horvath). Primary topics of discussion were introductions, formulating recommendations for programming at the Fall SDPA conference (October 27, 2018), plans for potential CE events after the conference, and ideas for additional projects (to be finalized in future meetings). There has never been an SDPA addiction committee. With no precedents established there was much to discuss. The Committee requests that it be re-named the Addictive Disorders Committee. It will next meet in May.
